The Denver Zoo, located in City Park was founded way back in 1896 with the acquisition of one single American Black Bear cub and has grown to become a world class zoo that attractions a great many visitors year in and year out.  The zoo places an emphasis on conservation and education, and has a number of events and displays that are both permanent and temporary and are designed to spread this message to its guests.  The Denver Zoo is a great place to visit for both locals and tourists alike, it has a long history of entertaining and amazing all who enter through its gates.

The animals are the highlight of the Denver Zoo, and rightly so.  The zoo is home to a wide variety of species, some native to the Rocky Mountain region and many more from various locations around the world.  This huge collection of wildlife makes the Denver Zoo a literal live interaction opportunity for visitors to this wonderful facility.  Here is a look at just some of the unique and amazing specimens that are featured in the zoo's exhibits.

Mammals
The Denver Zoo is home to many different kinds of mammals including the Arctic Fox, Asian Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Dromedary Camel, Grizzly Bear, Hippopotamus, Jaguar, Malayan Tapir, Musk Ox, North American Otter, Polar Bear, Prairie Bison, Red River Hog, Rocky Mountain Bighorn, Snow Leopard, Spotted Hyena, Western Lowland Gorilla, and more.

Birds
The Denver Zoo also has a great selection of birds for its visitors to get a glimpse of including the African Penguin, American Flamingo, Bald Eagle, Emu, Indian Peafowl, Rhinoceros Hornbill, and more.

Fish
Many people don't automatically think of the Denver Zoo as a place to see interesting species of fish on display, but among other fish the zoo has exhibits that include the Blind Cave Fish, Clown Fish, Green Moray Eel, Lionfish, Red-Bellied Piranha, and the Seahorse.

Many of the animals located at the Denver Zoo also play a part in feedings and shows that are open to the public.  There are wildlife shows, Sea Lion shows, a Pachyderm demonstration, as well as various bird exhibitions.

The Denver Zoo has a wonderful collection of themed areas included in its 80 acres of park space.  The zoo is home to Bear Mountain which was the first zoo habitat constructed to look and function like a natural habitat for the animals it contained built in the United States.  Predator Ridge gives visitors as much of a look at an actual African habitat as can be had inside the continental United States.  The Tropical Discovery area of the Denver Zoo is home to an indoor rain forest display that exhibits a waterfall, natural plants, a swamp area, a simulated river bank, and all of the species that one would expect to find in those habitats.  Primate Panorama is home to more than six acres of monkeys and apes on display.  This is easily one of the most popular locations in the zoo as everyone, especially children, love to watch the always exciting and always active primates on display.  With almost 200 different species of birds on display, Bird World at the Denver Zoo is a great place for visitors to see birds interact both with other birds as well as their natural habitat too.  This area includes the popular Bird World Kitchen viewing window which allows visitors to the zoo the chance to see what the birds eat on a daily basis.  The Pachyderm Habitat is also a popular attraction as those that make their way there can take a moment to see the elephants, rhinos, hippos and more romp and play in a habitat very similar to where they would live in the wild.  These naturalized habitats are world class and perform two jobs at once, they allow visitors to the zoo to see the animals in similar situations that they would appear in if still in the wild, and they also allow the animals to live under comfortable and somewhat normal conditions.

The Denver Zoo is also a great place to go for special events, both those organized by the zoo itself and those that are particular to the guest of the zoo as well.  The zoo holds events related to spring break, guest presentations, traveling exhibits, holiday celebrations, and more.  The zoo has also been utilized by guests for birthday and anniversary celebrations, weddings and wedding receptions, and family reunions to great success.  Holding or attending a special event at the Denver Zoo is a great way to spend a special day.

The Denver Zoo proves every year to be one of the most popular attractions in the city, and with one visit it is easy to see why.  The zoo is able to display its many rare animals in a way that is pleasing to the visitor but also in a way that promotes its message of conservation and animal welfare in a positive and unmistakable way.  The zoo caters to its visitors through well manicured landscaping, fun eating opportunities, great programs and educational displays, and above all fabulous animal exhibits.  For one of the safest bets as far as things to do in the city of Denver, a trip to the zoo is a must.
