The town of Parker is one of the most populace in the Denver area. Parker is a commuter town for people working in Denver, but it also has its own thriving community. It is an attractive town that offers its residents a rich range of amenities and recreational opportunities.
The history of the town of Parker begins with the foundation of the Pine Grove Post Office in 1862, although the area was regularly used by various groups of Native Americans including the Cheyenne and Arapaho for hunting before this time. The old trail alongside Cherry Creek that had been used by these hunters in the Parker area was then used by the first traders and frontiersmen who came to explore the region. The original post office at Pine Grove was later moved to a new site in the middle of what is now the town of Parker. It offered lodging, meals and provisions for sale, and became known as 20 Mile House, because of its distance from Denver. Twenty Mile House continued to develop, with the addition of a ballroom, a blacksmiths shop and a general store and official post office. A town quickly grew up around the store.
In 1981, an area including the subdivision of Rowley Downs, Parker Plaza, Parker Square and the downtown area was incorporated as the town of Parker. After this, the town continued to grow rapidly. The population was less than 300 in 1981, but it has now reached over 48,000.
Parker today is a vibrant community that continues to grow and now has the largest population of any town in the county. There is a selection of different housing types within Parker, including entry-level homes as well as luxurious executive homes. Parker has some interesting mixed use neighborhoods that ensure residents have easy access to all amenities and services. The downtown area of Parker is one of the town's most interesting features, due to its unique Western Victorian architecture.
There is a wealth of green and open space within the town, including some beautiful parks. Parker also has its own golf courses, which provide some additional green space in the local scenery as well as some excellent recreational opportunities.
Numerous community events and recreational activities are held in Parker, and there are a wide range of amenities in the town. The H2O'Brien outdoor swimming pool features water slides, a lap pool, a circulation pool and a spray garden. Other recreational amenities in the town includes the Parker Fieldhouse sports center, which has a wide range of facilities including a climbing wall, batting cages and a gym. There are also some cultural venues, including the Art, Cultural and Events Center, which has classrooms, a dance studio and a theater.
Parker lies within Douglas County, which has one of the best school systems in the Denver Area. The town is very family friendly, although it is also very popular with young professionals. Parker has an excellent transportation service. It is also easy to travel into Denver from Morrison. Many of the people who reside within Parker commute to work in the city of Denver.
