The municipality of Littleton is a suburb of Denver that straddles Douglas, Arapahoe and Jefferson counties. Littleton is Arapahoe County's county seat.
Littleton is located in one of the most beautiful areas in the Denver region, the foothills to the west of the city. The town has a selection of different parks and other open spaces, which provide excellent opportunities for recreation.
There are also a wealth of opportunities to eat out, shop or be entertained in Littleton. There are a selection of malls and shopping areas that are within easy reach for all of the residents of Littleton, including the Streets in South Glen, Park Meadows mall, Aspen Grove and South Glen mall.
Many community activities are held in the Bemis Public Library, which also provides an excellent range of books and IT facilities. The Littleton Museum is one of the most interesting attractions in the area, with an excellent collection of artifacts relating to local history, regular exhibitions, a lake and two historic farms that show how people lived in the areas in the 1860s and 1890s.
The Littleton area was first settled during the Pikes Peak gold rush in 1859. The search for gold bought many people to the region, and they were followed by an influx of farmers and merchants. Part of the land that is now Littleton was purchased by an engineer called Richard Sullivan Little, who specialized in developing irrigation systems for the western climate. Little originally came to the area in order to work, but he was so charmed by the area that he decided to make it his permanent home. In 1862, his wife came out west to join him.
In 1867, Little, along with a number of other residents, built the Rough and Ready mill that produced flour and provided an important economic foundation for the community. The local population had grown to well over 200 by 1890, when the residents decided that they wished to become a town through incorporation. This was the birth of Littleton.
Littleton today is a thriving community that offers a wide range of amenities and housing options. Littleton has the atmosphere of a small town, but it is within easy reach of the Denver city center, and so it offers its residents the best of both worlds. Many people who live in Littleton commute to work in Denver, or enjoy visiting the city for a night out.
Littleton has excellent transport links with Denver and it is a popular neighborhood for commuters who work in the city. The community is made up of a wide range of people, including many young professionals and growing families.
The town is served by the Littleton Public School system, which is the first district in Colorado to incorporate a program for children and babies under the age of two into the school system.
The incorporated town of Littleton is surrounded by a number of smaller unincorporated communities that all have Littleton addresses. These are Acres Green, Highlands Ranch, Heritage Hills, Carriage Club, Ken Caryl, Columbine and Roxborough Park. Each of these neighborhoods provides additional amenities that are within easy reach of Littleton.
