Lakewood is one of the largest incorporated cities in the Colorado region, in terms of population. It lies just to the west of Denver, within Jefferson County. The Lakewood area first began to be developed in 1889. The population grew steadily as the settlement expanded, but it was not until 1969 that Lakewood was incorporated as a city.

The city of Lone Tree is a suburb of Denver is located within Douglas County, although it is along the border with Arapahoe County. Lone Tree became a city in 1995, in order to ensure that the development of the area proceeded with the best interests of the local residents in mind.

Many of the amenities that are now available to the residents of Lone Tree were annexed to the city along with the RidgeGate planned community, which joined the city of Lone Tree in 2000.
